Our WUD4Kids Program 2026
Discover the World of User Experience for Kids
What is UX?
In the coming years, technology and artificial intelligence will change our lives even more profoundly—at school, during leisure time, and at work. They expand our possibilities, provide security, organize our daily lives, and take work off our hands. At the same time, concerns are growing that we may lose control or that technical solutions may be developed without considering people’s needs. How can people retain a strong role in shaping technology and create positive user experiences?
That is exactly what User Experience (UX) is about. To ensure that devices, interfaces, and everyday objects remain easy and enjoyable to use in the future, many disciplines work together: psychology, design, software and product development, user research, process and service design, and business management.
What do we want to achieve with WUD4Kids?
Our shared goal at World Usability Day 2026 is to introduce girls and boys in grades 5–7 to this UX mindset as part of National Future Day. We also offer exciting insights into selected professions in the field of User Experience.
When and where will it take place?
WUD4Kids (World Usability Day for Children) will take place on Thursday, 12 November 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event is the Campussaal at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), Bahnhofstrasse 6, 5210 Windisch. No prior knowledge is required – just enthusiasm for learning together! We provide all materials and equipment needed for the workshops. Food and drinks are also fully catered for.
How can I register?
WUD4Kids is offered as part of the official National Future Day program and is free of charge.
Places for girls and boys are limited. First come, first served…
Please note: To register for WUD4Kids, the children’s accompanying adults must be present at the main WUD event as visitors, speakers, or volunteers.
⚠️ Unfortunately, all available spots for girls and boys are already fully booked. We’ll definitely offer the program again in 2027! ⚠️
WUD4KIDS-PROGRAM
from 8:30 a.m.
WELCOME AND CHECK-IN
We welcome the children and accompany them to the workshop rooms. Parents and children will receive all necessary information about Future Day in advance. The children will be supervised by our facilitators throughout the day. We have scheduled sufficient breaks between the program sessions below. Drinks and fruit will be available for the children throughout the day.
9:00 – 9:30 a.m.
INTRODUCTIONS AND OVERVIEW OF THE DAY’S PROGRAMME
We introduce the program and schedule and prepare the children for the topics of User Experience (UX) and Design Thinking. Design Thinking helps children solve problems creatively, develop ideas as a team, and discover through play that there are many paths to good solutions. Throughout the day, we also explore the skills needed to guide creative processes and the professions that may play a key role in the future. Our facilitators are experienced UX experts who are happy to share practical tips and insights about UX with the children.
9:30 – 10:45 a.m.
TECHNOLOGY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN OUR DAILY LIFE (with Ricarda Urech, Sebastian Riedi, Lina Haag, Leandra Moscatiello)
Artificial intelligence (AI) is already part of many areas of our lives: translating texts, voice assistants, video recommendations, and games. But how will AI change our everyday lives in the future? Together, the children explore where they already encounter technology today and the opportunities and challenges it may create now and in the future.
10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
UX, AI AND CREATIVE IDEAS (with Ricarda Urech, Sebastian Riedi, Lina Haag, Leandra Moscatiello)
Technology is only truly helpful when it understands people’s needs. That is exactly what User Experience (UX) is about—and where artificial intelligence faces a major challenge. Together, the children define an engaging challenge and develop creative ideas for new products, apps, or AI applications. They learn that technology alone is not the focus; the people who use it always come first. Step by step, vivid images of a shared, better future emerge on large display boards. In the process, the children become familiar with ideation as an important stage of the user-centered development process, along with the roles and future skills involved.
12:00 – 12:45 p.m.
LUNCH BREAK (including food and drinks)
12:45 – 1:15 p.m.
SPORTS AND EXERCISES (An Active Start to the Afternoon)
After lunch, the children can get moving and try out different sports at FHNW.
1:15 – 3:00 p.m.
HANDS-ON SOLUTIONS WITH LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (with Susanne Schmidt-Rauch and Alwin Seiverth)
Refreshed and energized, the children get truly creative and constructive in the afternoon. Our aspiring UX designers use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to build solutions for the challenges of the future. The solutions take shape playfully as three-dimensional LEGO models. The aim is not perfection, but to try things out quickly and playfully. The children learn that ideas are easier to explain and develop when they are transformed into something tangible.
Who knows – perhaps one or two groundbreaking innovations will emerge from the children’s solution concepts. In recent years, we have seen some real highlights, from homework robots and basketball flying shoes to challenge machines
1:15 – 4:00 p.m.
PARALLEL: LIVE AI VIBE CODUNG SESSIONS (with Eugen Rodel, Emir Ak)
At the same time, there is another highlight: while the children’s teams build their LEGO prototypes, they also have the opportunity to bring selected concept ideas to life on the computer in live sessions with our AI expert. It is a perfect combination of physical and digital solution approaches.
4:00 – 4:30 p.m.
PRESENTATION OF RESULTS
Now comes the big moment: if they wish, the children can take the main stage. We recap the most important parts of the day and present our results to the World Usability Day participants. Of course, the children also receive a small keepsake from the day and some information about User Experience and related career paths.
4:30 p.m.
END OF WUD4KIDS AND HAND-OVER OF KIDS
The official WUD4Kids program has ended. The children will be handed over to their accompanying adults. If the accompanying adult would like to remain at WUD, the child is welcome to stay at the event with them.
We look forward to your registrations and creative ideas at WUD4Kids!
